Štěpánov lies in northern Haná, about 10 km from Olomouc. The town gained city status in 2020.

The first written mention of Štěpánov appears in a 1201 donation charter issued by King Přemysl Otakar I for the Premonstratensian monastery at Hradisko. St Lawrence’s Church dates from 1773, and the Feast of St Lawrence is a local tradition. In the Hutě area, a colony of 20 workers’ houses was established in the mid-19th century beside František Klein’s ironworks, which operated from 1842 to 1932.
