The municipality of Dolany lies 9 km northeast of Olomouc. It is 9 km south of Šternberk. The first written record of the municipality dates to 1235.

On the outskirts of Dolany, the foundations of the Carthusian monastery Kartouzka remain. The monks moved there in 1388. Local landmarks include the Church of St Matthew, a summerhouse in the rectory garden and a column bearing a statue of St John of Nepomuk.
